This garden was the Winner of the prestigious 2008 AILDM National Design award for residential projects under $25000.The strength of this design lies in the plant composition and its careful integration of the sites existing trees and shrubs.
The brief called for seasonal variation, provision of foliage & flowers for flower arrangements, and considered layering and themes across colour shape and texture of flowers and foliage. The plants scape is anchoredby a backbone of functional constructed pathways a water feature and garden lighting. Note Images by Sandy De Beyer
The second stage of this Beecroft garden makeover is currently under construction. We prepared a 3D model of the designwhich demonstrates the elements of the design. The inclusion of a louvered pergola outdoor room with integrated gas BBQ adjoins the rear of the home linking the kitchen and meals room to the rear yard.
The circular sandstone capped central frog pond is enclosed by a curved and raked dry pressed facebrick retaining wall. This serpentine wall has a double bull nose cappingand is a both retaining wall and a sitting wall forming a spectacular functional feature. A decomposed granite path spirals up to the custom designed and detailed day bed which capitalises on a relaxing district view.
This 4th floor apartment balcony garden presented us with many access challenges. We undertook the planting design and managed the installation of the garden. Soil was craned to the balcony in bags, drainage cell and water proofing was installed. The spa is to be delivered via helicopter.
This family swimming pool was designed by ecodesign and built by Crystal Pools. ecodesign managed the Complying Development Certificate documentation and we also project managed the construction.
Of particular note is the 130mm red iron bark deckingwith stainless steel bugle baton fittings. The same timber has been used for screening a water tank. Himalayan sandstone has been used for both the pool coping and for the floor in the outdoor room. Low voltage LED lighting has been specified and installed to extend the use of the garden into the night.
The key element of this design is the extensive accessed via bi-fold doors. One part of the deck features a large rectangular pond that sits flush with the decking boards and paved coping. The pebble-filled pond boasts three water jets and has a backdrop of tropical planting.
The outdoor room has been designed as a sitting room. Here you will find an outdoor fireplace for chilly winters and a ceiling fan for sultry summers. The timber ceiling, with its flush-mounted lighting, complements the timber decking and the slatted screen panels that sit either side of the wall containing the fireplace.
The design also includes an open pergola with laser-cut powdercoatedprivacy screen panels, integrated into the pergola posts. The stylised bamboo pattern is echoed by the bamboo-like tiger grass which frames thee pergola and also provides privacy. In front of the panels sit two trough-style designer planters in which the architectural leaves of Sanserveria sp.are planted.
This design creates a space which is privateand accessible by discretely blocking the views into and out of the neighbouring properties. Internal views to focal points were framed with planted privacy screens, such as the solid feature wall with textured finish, which also acts as a backdrop to the water feature. These elements contain the space and provide privacy while still allowing for that ‘open air’ feel to the outdoor area.
The functional elements of the space, include the built-in barbecue/outdoor kitchen and built-in bench seating which are integrated into the outdoor room. There is generous cooking preparation space around the state-of-the-art barbecue. A generous number of built-in drawers and cupboards under the cooking area put a stop to clutter.
Special additions to the cooking area include a stacked-stone splashback and horizontal timber batten screens behind the barbecue, a partially open pergola and a covered pergola over other areas, so the space can be enjoyed come rain or shine.
This outdoor dining room is accessed directly from the living rooms of the home through bi-fold doors. The seemless integration of the internal and external living areas creates the impression of having an additional room in the home.
Privacy was achieved with timber batten screening and native plantings with an Australian coastal theme. The low maintenance plantings and gardens have seasonal variations of colours and textures for enjoyment all year round.
The inbuilt BBQ with extensive benches and inbuilt seating create a functional outdoor cooking and dining room which can be used in all weather.
This landscape design was developed in close coordination with to the design of this modern residence. The floor plan allowed for design of three intimate outdoor spaces all of which extend the indoors outside. Resultantly we have created a sense that the home is much larger internally.
The first space links off the guest bed room and has a reflective meditative water feature mounted to a feature screening wall. In this space there is also opportunity to relax in privacy under the open pergola on the timber deck even there is a neighbouring home only metres away.
The second space is an almost entirely enclosed outdoor room which is accessed on 2 sides for the home via bi fold doors. This space has a fireplace and extensive privacy screening. The enclosure of the room provides a sense of intrigue as it invites you to investigate through to the remainder of the garden.
The remaining space is also accessed by bifold doors off the internal dining room. The timber deck is covered by a pergola which uses timber battens to create a passive solar effect. That is they are placed in such a way to allow winter sun and light but provide cool shade in summer. Three layers (Nature reed, native hedging and bamboo poles) in the screening create a composition and feature whilst also obscuring the adjacent fence.
This simple garden demonstrates a very minimal palette of natural materials effectively large format hardwood decking and bamboo screening. The composition of materials is complimented by simple architectural plantings of striking architectural Sanserverias and Cordylines.
A sense of relaxation and calm is created by keeping the design uncluttered and simple. A low budget but high quality functional landscape made for living within.
This functional makeover of a Heritage listed Lilyfield terrace, saw the back yard transformed into a spacious outdoor entertaining area. The deck links seamlessly with the internal living areas whilst the sandstone was reused from onsite. A grassed play area was retained below large existing eucalypts and complimented with native drought tolerant plantings.
For this project we undertook the Materials selection, Landscape Lighting, Irrigation and Planting design. Our brief was to maximise the usable area of the small back yard and minimise the maintenance required. We managed the landscape construction from commissioning a sculptor to create the central feature to engaging and managing the maintenance contractor.
This residence was designed to maximise outdoor entertaining on a steeply sloping site. The careful design of 1.8m retaining walls saw this difficult site transformed to a spectacular entertaining area. We prepared the development application documents and negotiated with Ku-Ring-Gai Council to ensure its approval.
This entry garden design for a West Pennant Hills Residence involved the detailed design of a sweeping sandstone staircase (later removed due to budget), retaining walls and extensive formal plantings. We prepared the development application documents and negotiated with Baulkham Hills Council to ensure this development was speedily approved.
This current work in progress has been designed and modelled in 3D to demonstrate to our client how the concept flows and how different aspects of the design can be altered by utilising different materials.
Effectively costs can be managed by interchanging materials to suit the construction budget and the effect on the overall design can be measured by inputting into the 3D model.
Note the pool adjacent to the living areas, the house required special structural design to accommodate this design and the management of the construction is essential to ensure that the site grading, retaining walls and swimming pool were installed and completed prior to the house being installed.
